CH 01Concept — spec work
The Moth
There is a machine bolted to the side of your house that you have never once looked at. It has run for fifteen summers in a side yard you walk past without turning your head.

The problem
HVAC is a distress purchase. Nobody thinks about the unit outside their house until the day it stops, and then they call whoever answers first. So the category gave up on being remembered and competes entirely on price. Every ad is a coupon — $79 tune-up, 0% financing, free second opinion. Flames and snowflakes, a smiling tech in a polo, a phone number. The work is interchangeable, which means the companies are too.
The insight
Everyone owns one. Nobody has any relationship with it at all. A brand that wants to be called first has to exist in the homeowner's head before the failure — and that requires the one thing none of the coupons have: a reason to watch.
The idea
Show it. Not the technician, not the invoice, not the family enjoying cool air. Twelve seconds at moth height. A moth wanders a sunbaked gravel yard, lands on the wire coil cage of an old condenser, and folds its wings. Then the machine does what machines do.
